Director’s Bio
Jongsoo Hwang, DMA
Dr. Jongsoo Hwang holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Sacred Music from the University of Notre Dame. His doctoral dissertation, Solesmes Chant Principles and Korean Phonology: Toward a Practical Korean Psalmody, proposes a practical model for Korean psalmody through the integration of Gregorian chant rhythmic principles with the phonological and poetic characteristics of the Korean language.
He earned his Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Florida State University, where he studied with Dr. André Thomas. He later continued his studies at the Brabant Conservatorium in the Netherlands, focusing on Early Vocal Ensemble and choral conducting. During this period, he studied early music and Gregorian chant interpretation with Dr. Rebecca Stewart and choral conducting with Sir Louis Buskens.
Dr. Hwang has served as a conductor and sacred music educator across Korea, the United States, and the Netherlands. His work spans early music, Gregorian chant, and modern liturgical performance, including educational programs, publications, recordings, translation projects, and international academic collaboration. He previously served as Music Director of the Gumi City Chorus and taught sacred music in graduate-level church music programs in Korea.
He continues field research on monastic chant traditions through regular study visits to Solesmes Abbey, Fontgombault Abbey, and Argentan Abbey in France, focusing on the practical application of monastic liturgical music traditions within Korean liturgical practice. He also participated in the recording project of Fr. Won Joo Park’s responsorial psalms, which are now widely distributed through the Catholic Good News platform in Korea.
His doctoral dissertation is permanently archived in the Library of Congress in the United States and is scheduled to be preserved in the library of Solesmes Abbey.
As the founding director of the Institute of Liturgy and Music in Korea, Dr. Hwang is dedicated to fostering a sacred music practice in which language and music organically converge within the liturgy. Through collaboration with internationally recognized scholars and practitioners in Gregorian chant and liturgical studies, the Institute is developing into a center of excellence for both scholarly research and practical formation in sacred music.

황 박사는 프랑스 Solesmes, Fontgombault, Argentan 수도원에서 그레고리오 성가 전례 전통에 대한 현장 연구를 지속적으로 수행하며, 수도원 전례 음악 전통을 한국 전례 문화 안에서 실천적으로 적용하는 연구를 진행하고 있습니다. 또한 한국 가톨릭 전례에서 사용되는 박원주 신부의 화답송 녹음 작업에 참여하여, 해당 자료가 가톨릭 굿뉴스를 통해 널리 보급되는 데 기여하였습니다.
그의 박사 학위 논문은 미국 Library of Congress에 영구 보존 자료로 등재되었으며, Solesmes 수도원 도서관에도 보관될 예정입니다.
현재 황 박사는 전례와 음악 연구소(Institute of Liturgy and Music in Korea) 소장으로서, 전례 안에서 언어와 음악이 자연스럽게 융합되는 전례음악의 원리를 바탕으로 한국어에 적합한 시편 성가의 실현을 추구하고 있습니다. 연구소는 국내외 저명한 전례 음악 전문가들과의 협력을 통해 학문성과 실천성을 겸비한 교육과 연구를 수행하며, 한국 가톨릭 전례음악의 미래를 향한 새로운 방향을 제시하고 있습니다.
