Institute of Liturgy and Music in Korea
Mission Statement of the ILMK
The Institute of Liturgy and Music in Korea is dedicated to the study and practice of sacred
music, especially Gregorian chant and Psalmody, within the Catholic liturgy.
Established to support the spiritual and artistic richness of the Church’s liturgical heritage, the Institute follows the vision articulated by Pope Pius X in his 1903 Motu Proprio, Tra le sollecitudini, which asserts that “sacred music must be holy, universal, and true art.”
Building on over two centuries of research and praxis from Solesmes Abbey, the Institute seeks to present a method for Korean psalmody that respects both the phonological and rhythmic characteristics of the Korean language and the principles of Gregorian chant.
This approach is rooted in the doctoral dissertation of the founding director and emphasizes the organic unity of language and music within the liturgical act.
Core activities of the Institute include:
- Structured courses and workshops
- Publication of liturgical scores and commentaries
- Professional recordings and performances
- International collaboration and translation
- Open-access educational content via the Institute’s website and YouTube channel
The Institute officially launches on August 15, 2025, a date that symbolically marks both the
Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Korea’s National Liberation Day.
In this convergence of sacred and national meaning, the Institute affirms its mission to serve the Church through music that is rooted in holiness, universality, and artistic truth.
“Sacred music must be holy, universal, and true art.”
— Pope Pius X, Tra le sollecitudini (1903)
